G4S Nigeria takes pride in being a diverse organisation, enriched by the participation of all individuals and communities.  John Avberhota, HR Director for G4S Nigeria, is accountable for providing overall generalist HR operational and strategic services across the organisation. This includes leadership for the full spectrum of the HR Function, including direction for organisational design and change management, defining and delivering management and team development programmes, compensation and benefits, employee relations, coaching, performance management, recruitment & selection and payroll. His role also includes working with the Executive Management Team to ensure that operational excellence in terms of HR processes, systems & structures support the overall business plan and strategy.

John is an HR professional with over 16 years’ experience across the UK (including Africa) in the private, public and NGO sectors, with a proven track record in developing and implementing People’s strategies and providing support to Senior Management across all aspects of HR generalist work.

John’s academic qualifications include a Master’s in Research (MRes) in International HR Management from London Metropolitan University; Master’s of Arts (MA) in International HR Management and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry, both from the University of North London. Attaining the Master’s degree in International HR Management has assisted John in developing his commercial understanding of the business, specifically in the HR profession.

A significant success of his career in HR has been his credibility to build strong and sustainable business partnerships with people (both internally and externally) at all levels.

A major challenge within John’s role is ensuring that the organisation has the resources capability in terms of delivering services across all service lines with utmost integrity and professionalism. That said, the diversity of the service lines as a whole are interesting as well as the workforce.

John enjoys the variety of his role, adding that, “The diversity of the workforce as well as the service lines are very interesting and challenging aspects of my role, which I experience and enjoy dealing with on a daily basis.”

John also feels that G4S promotes career progression and development. “It is very clear that internal movement is strongly encouraged and the onus is really on the individual to take this step forward. Personally, the sky is the limit within our organisation – an opportunity globally within the organisation is not one that I will debate on moving forward.”
