Job Introduction:

G4S - Skycom, based in Centurion has a vacancy for a Firmware Engineer responsible for the development and implementation of software for industry specific applications and systems. The Firmware Engineer plans, improves, supports and manages software applications.

Firmware within this context is the programmable applications running on embedded Linux, Windows Mobile and Android operating systems on hardware platforms such as door controllers, mobile phones and I/O devices. These applications provide instructions to the device on how to operate.

The Firmware Engineer will create and implement these instructions / applications which utilise the hardware platform and peripherals to perform pre-defined functions. The Firmware Engineer may alter, organise and model the functionality of software for a variety of industries or software packages, including the automotive, mining as well as oil and gas. 

Workplace environment is commonly in an office at G4S Head Office in Centurion. Travel and customer interaction in an advisory or technical capacity will be required.

Role Responsibility:

Review and interpret business requirements and technical specifications

  • Design solution to meet requirements into efficient code.

  • Test and debug code to produce error free programs.

  • Document test requirements for QA personnel.

  • Deliver solution within project guidelines and deadlines as reasonably determined

  • All the company and departmental procedures and rules must be followed in order to produce quality

  • Request clarity around system requirements as needed.

Investigate, analyse and rectify reported defects and shortcomings

  • Analyse and understand the reported issue.

  • Apply problem solving techniques to identify the optimum solution to the problem.

  • Modify the software to eliminate the problems.

  • Test and debug the software.

  • Determine that the solution submitted has been correctly applied.

  • As needed implement the customer solution.

Perform customer support duties where necessary

  • Assist support personnel in identifying software related issues.

  • Effectively communicate with colleagues and customers around time-frames, issues, outstanding requirements and current status. Provide accurate feedback to helpdesk.

  • Perform any software changes with the necessary urgency.

  • Assist support personnel and customers where necessary with software support issues.

Performs related duties as assigned

  • Follow all procedures and rules as defined.

  • Source control.

  • Coding standards.

  • Testing and debugging.

  • QA documentation.

  • Any other procedures that might be defined and reviewed from time to time.


The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate must have extensive experience within the following areas:

  • Experience with assembly level and C language development including the tools used to edit, compile/assemble and debug code in an embedded environment

  • Linux operating system architecture and use

  • Window operating system architecture and use

  • Microsoft SQL proficiency

Proficiency and familiarity with the following programming languages:

  • C

  • C++

  • C#

Protocol proficiency:

  • RS485

  • RS232

  • TCP/IP (UDP / TCP)

Peripheral Utilisation:

  • 3rd party i.e. biometric, tag reader etc.

  • I/O

  • GPIO

  • Serial port

  • USB port

  • RS485 bus

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other relevant discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • More than 2 years' experience
